3D Game Design Review

I am reviewing the 3D game The Sims. I was interested in reviewing this game because I have seen many people play it before on YouTube, and it seems like an interesting game to learn more about.

Some of the technology that the makers of the Sims use includes a drawing pad that you can use a special pen on, and what you draw will appear on the computer. For example, if you write the word “Hello” on the drawing pad, that word will appear on the computer screen without marking the word on the drawing pad. The makers of the Sims use this drawing pad to draw and create different things in the Sims such as rainbows, pools, guitars, etc. Another thing that the animators use are videos of the other makers acting out a scene or action. The animators use this to help animate the Sim’s actions. So, if someone acted out playing air guitar, the animators can use that clip to animate a Sim playing air guitar. One of the coolest things in the Sims are the options you have to customize your Sim. There are many, many physical appearance choices, such as eye socket depth, weight, cheek fullness, hair color, hair type, etc. You also have a very wide range of options to choose your Sim’s personality. You can choose evil, clumsy, brave, or even kleptomaniac!

3D design is combined with animation and sound design to create the Sims. 3D design is used to create everything in the Sims, from the characters themselves to houses, spaceships, guitars, fish tanks, etc. Animation is mostly used to animate the characters, but it is also sometimes used on things like pools or lakes where the water has to be moving. Sound design is used to voice the character’s voices, to create music for gameplay, and to create other sounds (mostly from inanimate objects) such as sirens or glass breaking. The designers give feedback on other designer’s ideas and projects so they can improve and adapt the game better to a certain idea.

I think that it would be a very interesting and new experience to work in a 3D design environment like what I reviewed. The people behind the Sims enjoy their job and get to invent creative things every single day, and it would be fun in my opinion to think creatively and be able to influence a big game so much. Though, I don’t see myself in this type of career because I am not a very creative person, and I can’t draw that well.
