Superbowl Ad Review

I chose the #Pokémon20 advertisement (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2F46tGehnfo) to review because I like to play video games, and I think that Pokémon is a very cool game. I also chose this ad because it is empowering & inspiring, especially to young people.

The main message that was communicated in this advertisement was that you can do anything you put your mind to. This message was shown by kids and young adults who were inspired by each other to do something amazing. The first person in the advertisement was a young boy who saw the Olympic Torch Runner in his village, and was inspired to run and train to be an Olympic Torch Runner. The second person was a girl who saw this little boy on TV, and she was inspired by him to try and beat people playing chess in the fastest time possible. The third person was a teenager who saw a video of this girl playing chess, and he was inspired by her to be unbeatable at football. The fourth person was a young adult who saw this teenager on an ad, and he was inspired to be the best at Pokémon battles. The final person was a little boy who was watching the Pokemon Battles on TV with his father and Pikachu. The father whispered to the little boy, “You can do that.”

A few of the design elements that caught my attention included the duration of a shot. You would see a certain angle of a scene for only a few seconds, and then the camera switched angles. Another design element that caught my eye was the sound. The main sound was a drum beat that alternated speeds, occasionally stopping for an inspired person to whisper, “I can do that.” One important thing that caught my eye was the lighting. It is not very noticeable because the advertisement goes so fast, but there are a lot of flashes of light throughout the ad, becoming more and more frequent as the commercial reaches it’s climax. The flashes are often from cameras, or are caused by lights glinting off objects. They also zoom in on the person’s eyes when they say, “I can do that.”

I think that this advertisement is outstanding because it has an inspiring message, and the tagline “I can do that” is powerful in this commercial. Also, the music/drum beat throughout the ad catches your attention. Even though this ad is for the game Pokémon, it seems to be sending a different message than just “Play Pokémon”. It sends the idea that anyone can be amazing at what they are good at, no matter what it is or where they came from.
