CGI Short Film Review

I am reviewing the short film “Pockets” by Daniels. (https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwjlgLfHgeLPAhUs1oMKHUdtD8sQyCkIHjAA&url=https%3A%2F%2Fvimeo.com%2F50996114&usg=AFQjCNFCCEurgwpsAcgFRx-EBpySrhXWzQ&sig2=RN45avs6I_pfCd6TbTthKg).

The first thing to grab my attention in this film was about 37 or 38 seconds into the film, when the main character tries to rob a person. Let’s call this person “Pocket Man”. The main character tries to rob Pocket man because he doesn’t have any money, and wants to get his girlfriend and himself a nice dinner. The main character reaches into Pocket Man’s pocket for his wallet, but realizes that his (the main character’s) hand is sticking out of his own pocket.

Some of the techniques with lights, sounds, and effects that the film uses to grab my attention when the main character realizes that his own hand is sticking out of his own pocket, the background noises suddenly increase in volume, and then stop completely. The music also stops when the background noises stop.

Mostly, CGI is used in this film to create the main character’s and Pocket Man’s hands sticking out of each other’s pockets. It is also used to pull things in and out of other pockets, such as when Pocket Man steals the policeman’s gun, and when Pocket Man pulls Tammy (the main character’s girlfriend) through her jacket. At the end of the film, the main character burns Pocket Man’s jacket, which burns off all the rest of the pockets in the world, so there are no more pockets.

The moods and feelings expressed in this film are mostly danger, confusion, and fear. There is danger when the main character and Pocket Man are fighting, confusion & fear when the main character figures out that Pocket Man’s pockets aren’t what they seem to be, and fear also when Pocket Man puts a knife to Tammy’s throat.

Some techniques and technologies that are used to create those moods & feelings include lighting, music, and the character’s facial expressions. Also, sped-up and slow-motion shots were also used to create the moods & feelings.

There are two impressive scenes that I feel use CGI technology very well. The first scene is when the main character and Pocket man are fighting, from about 1 minute and 15 seconds to 1 minute and 40 seconds. I believe that CGI was used in this scene by filming two different parts. The first part might have been the on-location filming, where the main character and Pocket Man fight each other. The second part might have been filmed on a green screen, where they can film the two character’s hands sticking out of the pockets, and then layer the two parts over each other to create that scene. I don’t know if that’s how it was created, but that is my idea.

The second impressive clip is when Tammy gets pulled into her jacket by Pocket Man, from 2 minutes and 5 seconds to 2 minutes and 8 seconds. I believe that CGI was used in this clip differently in each shot. There are 3 shots in this clip: the first is where we see Tammy throw her jacket away from her, and it goes out of the frame. Then, it flies back at her with Pocket Man’s arm sticking out of it. His arm grabs Tammy’s head, and pulls her head down closer to the jacket. I think this short clip was made by someone going underneath Tammy’s jacket with their arm sticking out of it, and playing the part of Pocket Man’s arm. They may have done this with a green screen so later the filmmakers could have used CGI to erase visible parts of the actor, so you could only see their arm coming out from the jacket. The second shot is when Tammy’s head is stuffed into the jacket. This is a close-up shot, so it could have easily been made by another person simply putting a jacket over Tammy’s head, and they wouldn’t have needed to use CGI at all for that clip. The third shot is when Tammy’s legs are seen disappearing into her jacket. They probably filmed the jacket being thrown up into the air on location, then later filmed Tammy’s legs kicking in front of a green screen. The filmmakers then combined the two to create this shot.
